After dark

The forest transforms after sunset

Once the sun drops behind the ridge, Monteverde's cloud forest becomes a different place entirely. Nocturnal creatures that stay hidden by day emerge to feed, hunt and call to each other, and the trails fill with a chorus of frogs, insects and owls.

Our certified guides know exactly where to look. Groups stay small and unhurried, moving quietly along the trail with flashlights trained on the forest floor and canopy, pausing whenever something moves. No two nights are ever quite the same.

Wildlife you might see

Every night is different, but these are the sightings guests ask about most.

  • Frogs & toads

Red-eyed tree frogs, glass frogs and the occasional poison dart frog, often spotted by their calls before you see them.

  • Kinkajous

Small, golden-eyed rainforest mammals that move through the canopy at night, feeding on fruit and nectar.

  • Owls

Mottled owls and other nocturnal raptors, often heard calling before their silhouette appears against the canopy.

  • Insects & arachnids

Walking sticks, katydids, glowing click beetles and, on some nights, tarantulas emerging from their burrows.

  • Sleeping birds

Daytime birds roosting motionless on low branches — a rare chance to see species up close that are skittish by day.
