Monteverde is a year-round destination, but January through April (dry season) offers the clearest trails and easiest hiking, while May through November brings lower prices, fewer visitors, and a greener, more active cloud forest.
Monteverde is roughly a 3 to 4 hour drive from San Jose or Juan Santamaria International Airport, via Sardinal or the Lake Arenal route. Shared shuttles, private transfers and rental cars are all common ways to make the trip.
El Tesoro guides five experiences: a Night Tour, a Birdwatching Tour in our private reserve, Horseback Riding, a Mushroom Tour, and a self-guided Day Pass with full trail access for up to 10 hours.
Yes. Most of our tours run 2 to 4 hours, and the Day Pass gives you up to 10 hours of trail access, so a single day in Monteverde is enough to hike, spot wildlife, and still travel back the same evening if needed.
We recommend booking at least a few days ahead, especially for the Night Tour and Birdwatching Tour, since group sizes stay small with one certified guide. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we'll confirm availability.
Bring closed shoes with good grip, a light rain layer, a warm layer for cooler evenings, water, and insect repellent. Monteverde's cloud forest climate shifts quickly between sun, mist, and rain, often within the same afternoon.
Monteverde sits at roughly 1,400 to 1,700 meters (4,600 to 5,600 feet) above sea level. Its cloud forest climate stays cool and humid year-round, with frequent mist, an average temperature near 18°C (64°F), and rainfall concentrated from May through November.
El Tesoro's private reserve is home to the resplendent quetzal, three-wattled bellbird, howler and white-faced monkeys, sloths, coatis, and dozens of hummingbird and frog species, alongside wild mushrooms found on our forest trails.
El Tesoro is a family-run reserve, guided by the same family since 1986, rather than a large commercial operator. Group sizes stay small, tours are led by the family and certified local guides, and the reserve itself is privately owned land, not a shared public trail system.
