Trails through Monteverde's cloud forest at El Tesoro, Costa Rica

The valley

One of the world's great cloud forests

Monteverde sits in the Tilaran mountain range of Puntarenas Province, where trade winds from the Caribbean meet the continental divide and wrap the forest in a permanent, drifting mist. The result is a cool, biodiverse world unlike anywhere else in Costa Rica.

Roughly 4.5 hours from San Jose and 2.5 hours from Arenal, the town of Santa Elena and the surrounding hamlet of Canitas — where El Tesoro has guided visitors since 1986 — serve as the gateway to reserves, canopy walks and the family trails that make up our own 65-acre farm.
