From spore to forest

Cultivation meets wild foraging

The tour starts in our cultivation area, where you'll see how mushrooms are grown from spore to harvest, and what they need to thrive. It's a hands-on look at a process most visitors have never seen up close.

From there, we head out onto the forest trails, where your guide points out wild mushrooms growing in their natural habitat — from tiny parachute mushrooms scattered across the leaf litter to woody bracket fungi growing on fallen logs.

On the trail

What you might see

Monteverde's cloud forest is one of the most mushroom-rich habitats in Costa Rica.

  • Bleeding Tooth Fungus

A white to pale pink cap that "bleeds" bright red droplets when young and damp. Easily the most striking mushroom on the trail.

  • Bioluminescent Mycena

Glowing a faint green in total darkness — one of the highlights of our Night Tour, but sometimes spotted here too.

  • Pink & Scarlet Cup Fungi

Bright pink to salmon cups on fallen branches, and their smaller scarlet cousins on twigs and bark.

  • Bracket & Shelf Fungi

Hard, woody, shelf-shaped fungi growing directly from tree trunks, some persisting for years.

  • Parachute Mushrooms

Tiny, delicate mushrooms scattered by the hundreds across the leaf litter after rain.

Easy. The trail is short and gently graded, suitable for most fitness levels, though it can be muddy after rain.
Ask your guide during the tour — availability depends on the current harvest.
Light rain doesn't stop the tour — and it's often when mushrooms are most active. Bring a light rain jacket just in case.
